1958 sporty oil flow question

Postby twinflames » Thu Sep 20, 2007 8:31 am

Hi guys, heres my question. As i cannot find any information on the web in any other areas i wondered if anyone out there has a sporty around this age that can tell me how exactly the oil flows thru this particular bike. The oil pump which typicaly has an/the input DOES NOT! because of the age. i have enclosed a pic of the 3 ports and there location jusr aft of the rear jug on the cam side so that someone out there can help me to identify so i can plumb the oil bag im making correctly.

if anyone has a copy of "modern motorcycle mechanics" that includes this year i am told it will hold the key.
thanks guys im sure youll come thru for me, you always have.

Little late, but maybe someone else is looking for the info as well.

The rearmost pipe is your Feed line, it has a larger diameter hole in it, under your barbed fitting.

The fitting behind the wall section there, directly behind your pushrod tube is the vent, goes to a hole right inside your cam compartment.

The final fitting is the return, that is also where your rear chain oiler goes if you have an XLH.

Service manual isn't much help on this one, the 59-69 book says the feed hooks directly up to the oil pump. Which may be the case for 66-on, but for the earlier stuff we have to rely on other materials.

Hope this helps someone.

Hi,

I had similar problems identifying oil pipe placement to try and identify what my breather leaking oil was caused by. I have 1962 sportster with 1970 ironhead engine. I found this on the oil paths http://www.sportster.org/tech/misc-ironhead/oil-route.shtml. Although says 1975 seems to apply generically. Or seems to be general way done although the actual implementation appears to vary. Hope helps if not please ignore.

In the previous post was mentioned "The fitting behind the wall section there, directly behind your pushrod tube is the vent, goes to a hole right inside your cam compartment." Is this purely for venting air pressure from the cam chest and nothing but a hole there???

The reason is that I wanted to check as I have a problem where the breather is giving excessive oil and I think that oil is being sent back into the engine by this cam chest vent....causing the excess oil then to come out the other breather hose. But was not sure if this cam chest vent was a direct hole or what. Trouble in finding information in the manual and wish internet searches regarding this cam chest vent.

Thanks,
Andy
