Are these XL parts?

Postby 210ken » Fri Nov 28, 2008 11:58 pm

I posted this an another section but it doesn't get much traffic so I'll try here. I'm not sure that the parts I need help with are for a sportster so here goes. The base bike that this scoot was built from was a 74 XLH. The engine, Kayaba lower legs, front and rear hubs are all 74 XL except I don't know about the trees and Battery box.
Take a look at the attached pic and please help me indentify what year and model of Harley this battery box is off of. The lid is finned aluminum. It's only big enough for a small 12V batt. Whatever it's geneolgy, it's, pretty well made and doesn't appear to be a one-off piece. It looks mass produced. The Harley Davidson logo on the side looks like a legit piece of HD advertising trim. It could have been added by the PO, again, I don't know. It's frustrating to not know the origins of the parts that make up this bike. I've never owned a scoot I didn't build and this one has a somewhat blind past.

The trees are a mystery to me as well. Any guesses on them? The tubes are 35mm.

Did anyone happen to notice the primary cover in the pic? It and the engine case had a little surgery. I've been out of the bike game for over 20 years so it took me by surprise when it finally sunk in that something was missing ! Was this ever a common modification?

Any help on answering these questions is greatly appreciated.

Can't give you any answers, but props to that Sporty. Nice scooter.

Battery Box!

Postby gasketscraper » Fri Dec 26, 2008 3:00 am

Oh man I'm glad you posted. That Battery Box was the subject of a major safety recall. Why don't you send it me and i'll see thats its properly disposed of! Seriously, I don't have a clue-not sure why its so important to you. But very clean sporty. I must be missing something on the primary cover/engine comment. Why don't you spell it out for us. :?:
The only substitute for a big engine is a BIGGER engine. Do you ever feel the need for speed?

Looks like the square "notch" has been cut off on both the left case and the primary cover and then filled and rounded. Looks pretty sweet to me. I've never seen that mod on a '74, but I don't see a bunch of them running around over in Italy either...IH Sportys are pretty rare here.

It's hard for me to tell by the pictures (my eyes ain't what they used to be) but did you change it over to left side shift / right side brake?

Ghostrider got it right Gasketcraper. The electric starter hump has been removed and filled to look like a pre 68. :!:

Thanks for the public service announcement regarding my batterybox Gasketscraper. Now that I know it may be hazardous to my health and welfare like booze, drugs, guns, hotrods & cycles, I feel much more comfortable having it bolted to my scooter.

 Yes the forward controls swap the actuation of the stock '74 right hand shift to left hand. Same with the brake. They were designed and fabbed by the previous owner and are nicely done with bushed levers and shafts and sphereical rod ends.

I still don't know what brand the trees are but I have discovered that the sliders are Ceriani. Perhaps the tress are too but I cannot confirm it.

Thanks for the comments and kind words.
