hey guys,,new here,,,,, going to chop my 76 Iron head...sporty......Ineed to know what the hell , that shit around the neck is made of.......the part that the back bone and the down tubes go into........is it cast iron,,,cast steel,,,,or what? it would help to no ,,,so i can weld it,,,,, any way thanks
The cast units where the frame tube is obviously steel welded to the casting are steel. Any mild steel welding process can be used to weld to the casting. The "cut" picture above is pretty well "old school". Make the cut. Stick on the forks and tire. Put a couple of people on the bike, torch the spot above the cut so it bends until the frame is level or where you want it. Cut a wedge of steel to fill the resulting gap and weld up carefully. Cut steel plates for each side of the steering head to reinforce the hacked area. Take special care to check alignment several times. Do an especially good job of welding.
