Oilite bushes

Postby Russ » Thu Jul 08, 2010 10:19 am

I'm thnking of using oilite bushes (sintured bronze bushes) on the foot controls of my project. Does anybody know the clearance I should allow between the bush and surface that's going to swivel around it? Also how critical is the clearance? I'm working in a garage with very basic kit and on a sub-basic budget.

Thanks

I plan on doing the same. My thought would be to have minimal clearance between the parts, just enough to move freely.

I hone bushings in "slow" rotation applications to .0005"...but with a pin hone machine where control is good and everything is parallel. Working by hand will probably be best with a reamer to final size the bushings. Just enough to get free motion is where you want to be. .001" to .003" will work OK. Often, you can get sized bushings that will press into pretty standard size drilled holes and will take cold rolled shaft resulting in a decent fit. Worse case is to take the tight parts to a machine shop and they can pin hone the bushings...which will result in not only smooth action but exceptional wear.
